It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the loss of one of our officers and SMPOA members. Officer Kenneth Copeland, 58, and other SMPD officers were serving a warrant Monday afternoon when the suspect shot him multiple times. Copeland was wearing his protective vest and was immediately transported to Central Texas Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Today the House of Representatives did not vote on this bill.  The legislative committee met again with legislators and offered our points of opposition. Many had indicated that they were contacted by their local FOP members. Thank you for making contact with your local state representative.
Texas Officer Shot To Death While Serving Warrant

Police have revealed the identity of an officer shot and killed while serving a warrant in Central Texas. A statement issued by San Marcos, Texas, officials said 58-year-old Officer Kenneth Copeland died Monday afternoon after being shot multiple times by a suspect while Copeland was serving a warrant.

Constitution Amendment Proposals

In recent weeks a vote was placed online after a proposal was made to make an amendment to the DSABC Constitution. That proposal is to solely give the PAC elected board members the authority to make all decisions for PAC endorsements and contributions. This in turn, eliminates the Executive Board from having any input unless there is a tie, at which time the DSABC President will serve as a tie breaker.

December 03, 2017 Mids B responded to the Treehouse Apartments #117 for a Burglary of a Habitation in progress.  The Victim was in bed asleep, but woke up at approximately 0538 hours to find Chaitanya Cherukuri crouched at the foot of her bed.  The Victim grabbed a personal taser while yelling for her roommate to call SMPD.

Stewart of the Las Cruces, NM, Police Department.  Retired Officer Stewart was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by two carjacking suspects during a high-speed chase on Monday, November 27, 2017 in Las Cruces.

Last month, eleven law enforcement officers gave their lives in the line of duty in the United States.  Of those deaths, five were the result of gunfire, three were the result of assault, one officer drowned, one died in an automobile crash, and one died as the result of a heart attack. Deaths took place in eight different states.

26 Killed In Church Attack In Texas’ Deadliest Mass Shooting

A man dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 in what the governor called the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history. The dead ranged in age from 5 to 72 years old.

Narcan. The New Jersey Department of Corrections is allocating $1.2 million to train DOC custody staff on the administration of Narcan and provide each staff member with a dose to carry on their person in case of an inmate emergency. The funding also will provide one Narcan dose to each inmate being released, estimated to be about 10,000 each year. Since April 2014, there have been more than 32,000 deployments of Narcan by law enforcement and EMS agencies throughout New Jersey including more than 9,500 deployments for 2017 thus far.

Felon Who Killed NM Officer In 2016 Sentenced To Life Without Parole

A fugitive who fatally shot a New Mexico officer during a 2016 traffic stop was sentenced to life without parole Thursday. Jesse Hanes took a plea deal in May and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the death of Officer Jose Chavez, KOB News reported. Hanes and passenger James Nelson were wanted for a fatal shooting in Ohio when they were pulled over by Chavez in August of 2016.
